GSK is the latest to join the growing list suing Pfizer over covid injections

By Iron Will / April 27, 2024 /

GlaxoSmithKline (“GSK”) is suing Pfizer and BioNTech in Delaware federal court, alleging infringement of GSK’s patents on mRNA technology in their covid injections.

As reported by Reuters, GSK alleges in the lawsuit filed on Thursday that Pfizer-BioNTech’s Comirnaty injections infringe on GSK’s mRNA vaccine patents developed more than a decade before Pfizer began marketing its “vaccine.”

A Pfizer spokesperson said in a statement that the company is “confident in our [intellectual property] IP position around Comirnaty.”

A GSK spokesperson said the company believes its patents “provided the foundational technology used in Pfizer and BioNTech’s covid-19 mRNA vaccines.”

London-based GSK asked the court for an unspecified amount of monetary damages from Pfizer and BioNTech that includes an ongoing patent licencing fee.

They are beings above the average of their societies, they are the essence of the people who have built all cultures and conquered horizons. They are there, next to you, they look normal, but they are superheroes.

Canada’s Per Capita GDP Falls to 2017 Levels: StatCan

By Iron Will / April 26, 2024 /

Canada’s per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has fallen to 2017 levels amid slower economic growth and record population increases, according to a new report by Statistics Canada.

“Real GDP per capita has now declined in five of the past six quarters and is currently near levels observed in 2017,” reads the report, “Canada’s gross domestic product per capita: Perspectives on the return to trend.”

“Recent declines in per capita output have also brought concerns over Canada’s weak productivity performance to the fore, since historically, much of the long-term growth in GDP per capita has reflected sustained improvements in labour productivity.

The report notes that while Canada’s GDP per capita grew by about 1.1 percent yearly since 1981, the COVID-19 pandemic led to its fall of 7 percent below the long-term trend. In real dollar amounts, that means it declined by around $4,200 per Canadian after 2020.

Copper juniors converge in BC, the Yukon – Richard Mills

By Iron Will / April 26, 2024 /

A junior resource company’s place in the mining food chain is to acquire projects, make discoveries and hopefully advance them to the point when a larger mining company takes it over. Discoveries won’t be made if juniors aren’t out in the bush looking at rocks.

Few exploration companies have the money or technical expertise to “go mining”. For many, the goal is to hit upon a deposit that’s good enough to attract a major that will acquire the asset. Another pathway is for the junior to partner with a larger company. An option or joint venture (JV) agreement is a way for juniors to gain access to the financial and technical resources needed to build the mine.

Juniors are extremely important to major mining companies because they are the firms finding the deposits that will become the next mines. In this way, juniors help the majors to replace the ore that they are constantly depleting in their operating mines.

Don Kerr: Canada’s population growth is exploding. Here’s why

By Iron Will / April 26, 2024 /

Canada’s rate of population growth is the highest in the G7 and among the highest in the OECD

As a professional demographer who has carefully followed Canada’s demographic evolution over the past three decades, I am shocked by some of the most recent demographic data released by Statistics Canada. From 1991 through to 2015, the year in which the current government was first elected, the annual growth in Canada’s population grew in a predictable manner at an average of roughly 320,000 persons per year.

Following 2015, that growth has rapidly accelerated. Following a temporary dip in population growth due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Canada’s population growth reached just over half a million in 2021 (509,285 persons), close to a million in 2022 (930,422), and then an astronomical 1.27 million persons in 2023.

Put another way, whereas for several decades Canada’s population growth rate hovered at about 1.0 percent annually, this rate has more than tripled in a few short years, up to 3.2 percent in 2023.

Pfizer scores FDA nod for hemophilia B gene therapy, will charge $3.5M per dose

By Iron Will / April 26, 2024 /

Ten years after dipping its toes into the gene therapy pool in a licensing deal with Spark Therapeutics, Pfizer has gained FDA approval for the acquired treatment.

The U.S. regulator has endorsed Beqvez (fidanacogene elaparvovec-dzkt) for adults with the bleeding disorder hemophilia B. It becomes the first FDA-approved gene therapy for Pfizer and the second in the indication following CSL and uniQure’s hemophilia B treatment Hemgenix, which became the world’s most expensive drug at $3.5 million when it was approved in 2022.

Pfizer had the chance to undercut its rival on price but decided to charge the same $3.5 million for Beqvez. The therapy will be available to patients this quarter, a spokesperson confirmed on Friday to Fierce Pharma.

According to the CDC, the current number of males with hemophilia living in the U.S. is around 33,000. Hemophilia A is more prevalent, with 12 cases per 100,000 U.S. males, while there are just 3.7 cases per 100,000 U.S. males for hemophilia B.
