By Valerie / April 30, 2024 /

Sadiq Khan played down fears over “gangs running around with machetes” just a week before Tuesday’s sword attack in Hainault, north-east London.

Challenged by Susan Hall, his Conservative rival in the London mayoral election, over gang violence at night, the Labour Mayor told her she should “stop watching The Wire – we’re not living in Baltimore, USA, in the noughties.”

Germany’s disastrous embrace of gender self-ID The new ‘Self-Determination Law’ is a threat to women and children.

By Valerie / April 30, 2024 /

Germany’s coalition government is deeply unpopular. A poll this month found that 78 per cent of Germans are unhappy with it. But instead of trying to address public concerns, it has doubled down on its hated woke agenda.

On 12 April, the government passed the ‘Self-Determination Law’. Replacing the Transsexual Law from 1980, the new law will no longer require people to obtain psychological and medical assessments before being able to change their legal gender. People aged 14 and over will now be able to change their first name and gender simply by making a declaration to a registry office – although under-18s will need to obtain consent from their ‘legal guardians’ or, if they refuse, through a family court.

Swatting

By Roli / April 30, 2024 /

You’ve heard of police SWAT teams. SWAT stands for Special Weapons and Tactics, by the way. Today, authorities are trying to combat a crime that’s being called “swatting.” It’s when somebody falsely reports an emergency at somebody else’s house to embarrass or inconvenience the victim, or even bring him into a potentially violent confrontation with police. Lisa Fletcher reports more states are trying to combat the problem.

Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott is no stranger to controversy, criticism, and even threats. Before coming to Washington, he spent eight years as the Sunshine State’s governor.

But last Christmas, he and his family faced something new.

A caller to Naples police reported a shooting at the senator’s home. Police responded but also called Senator Scott directly to find out what was going on.

Over Half Of Americans Support Mass Deportations Of Illegal Immigrants

By Valerie / April 29, 2024 /

Just over half of Americans say that they support the mass deportation of illegal immigrants, a recent poll found as the issue takes center stage in the race for the presidency.

A slim majority of Americans, 51 percent, said that they support the mass deportation of illegal immigrants, a policy that former President Donald Trump has promised if he is reelected to the presidency in November. Support for mass deportations varied widely by partisan affiliation, with 68 percent of Republicans, 46 percent of Independents, and 42 percent of Democrats in support of the measure.

The poll of 6,251 people, performed by The

Like 10,000 Gazans In Canada

By Valerie / April 29, 2024 /

A federally-funded immigrant aid society is petitioning Parliament to accept at least 10,000 people from Gaza. It also asked that Gazans gain access to the same free medicare, social services and legal counsel as Ukrainian war refugees.

“The present restriction to accepting the application of refugees only from within Gaza is unreasonable, inhumane and the present maximum of 1,000 individuals is inhumanely restrictive in the face of the dire threats to life they face,” said electronic petition E-4959. The document was registered with Parliament Friday.

The petition was introduced by Sultan Ali Sadat, a director with the Saskatoon Open Door Society. The immigrant aid group received $1.3 million in federal funding last year.

Swedish police engaged in sexual relationships with gang members and fed information leading to multiple homicides, newspaper claims At least 30 police employees have been sacked as a result of the scandal

By Valerie / April 29, 2024 /

Sweden has been shocked by a recent scandal after a daily newspaper published an investigation revealing that several police officers had leaked information to members of criminal gangs with whom they had links.

The Scandinavian country is the scene of a criminal gang war that reached an unprecedented level in late 2023 with a record number of armed clashes amid the struggle to control drug trafficking. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also expressed concern on Monday after a journalistic investigation by the daily Dagens Nyheter (DN) revealed that several police employees with sensitive gang-related information had passed it on to the criminals themselves.

Nurses protest ‘untested’ AI technology use in hospitals

By Roli / April 27, 2024 /

Some nurses objected to a platform in the Epic EHR that determines nurse staffing based on real-time charting. Cathy Kennedy, RN, neonatal intensive care nurse at Kaiser’s Roseville (Calif.) Medical Center and a nursing union leader, told the San Francisco Standard that if nurses don’t log charts right away the next shift could be short-staffed.

Other nurses said it might not account for their time-sensitive work that can’t easily be measured, such as educating patient family members or preparing for chemotherapy treatments before a patient arrives, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

“We are the providers at the bedside, we know how to take care of patients best,” Amy Grewal, RN, an oncology nurse at Kaiser Permanente Fresno (Calif.) Medical Center, told the Chronicle. “No algorithm can tell us.”

Stop Using Your Face or Thumb to Unlock Your Phone

By Roli / April 26, 2024 /

Last week, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in California released a ruling that concluded state highway police were acting lawfully when they forcibly unlocked a suspect’s phone using their fingerprint. You probably didn’t hear about it. The case didn’t get a lot of coverage, especially because the courts weren’t giving a blanket green light for every cop to shove your thumb to your screen during an arrest. But it’s another toll of the warning bell that reminds you to not trust biometrics to keep your phone’s sensitive info private. In many cases, especially if you think you might interact with the police (at a protest, for example), you should seriously consider turning off biometrics on your phone entirely.
