Liberals reappoint CBC president to shorter second term

By Iron Will / June 2, 2023 /

CBC/Radio-Canada President and CEO Catherine Tait will keep her job for the next one and-a-half years as the federal government begins the process of picking a permanent replacement.

“It’s a critical issue that all Western democracies are grappling with,” Tait told CBC News on Thursday.

“I believe Canada’s public broadcaster has a unique role to play to address disinformation, build trust in verified and trusted news, and, most importantly, to foster Canadian conversations in English, French and indigenous languages.”

Tait will stay on until January 2025. Her first five-year term ends in July.

Pro-assisted suicide Canadian Association of MAiD Assessors and Providers received $3,287,996 in government money in 2021.
(LifeSiteNews) – A prominent pro-life researcher called out the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for handing out more than $3 million to a pro-euthanasia advocacy group.

A search on the government of Canada’s website pertaining to grants and contributions shows that the pro-euthanasia Canadian Association of MAiD Assessors and Providers (CAMAP) received $3,287,996 in government money in 2021 in a grant that expires on March 31, 2025.

By comparison, the same group in 2018 received only $41,480. That was two years after Canada legalized euthanasia, or Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).

GMO risk assessment – a “fact-free” exercise

By Roli / June 2, 2023 /

This article originally published on GM Watch by Clare Robinson

At a conference in honour of Dr Árpád Pusztai, Prof Vyvyan Howard exposed ongoing regulatory failure over GM crops and foods.

On 26-27 May, I attended a two-day conference in Edinburgh called The Integrity of Science, about the conflicts between corporate interests, public policy, and independent science, in honour of the late Dr Árpád Pusztai (1930–2021).

In the late 1990s Dr Pusztai carried out important experiments to test the safety of GMO potatoes and found that they harmed the health of rats. In 1998 he went public with his findings, saying on British TV that he would not eat GM potatoes and thought it was “very unfair to use our fellow citizens as guinea pigs” for GMO technology.

Federal employee working from home challenges COVID-19 mandate in court

By Roli / June 2, 2023 /

“I’m doing this for my daughters,” Andre Givogue, a federal government employee of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and father of two young girls, told Rebel News on Thursday in Ottawa after his hearing in Federal Court challenging the Trudeau government’s imposition of a COVID-19 vaccination requirement upon the federal government’s workforce.

Despite having a work-from-home arrangement with his department prior to the federal government’s vaccination requirement, Givogue was suspended for six months without pay for refusing to disclose his vaccination status in accordance with the Trudeau government’s decree.

Givogue appealed to the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) to allow…

YouTube Scraps 2020 US Election Misinformation Policy

By Iron Will / June 2, 2023 /

YouTube will stop removing content that falsely claims the 2020 US presidential election was plagued by “fraud, errors or glitches,” the platform said Friday, a decision quickly criticized by anti-misinformation advocates.

The announcement by the Google-owned video website is a marked departure from its policy initiated in December 2020, which attempted to curb false claims — most importantly pushed by then-president Donald Trump — that his re-election loss to Joe Biden was due to the vote being “stolen.”

Vote 174-150 To Fire Johnston

By Iron Will / June 1, 2023 /

The Commons yesterday voted 174 to 150 to fire David Johnston as cabinet’s “special rapporteur” on Chinese subterfuge. Johnston rejected the vote, saying he didn’t answer to MPs.

“I deeply respect the right of the House of Commons to express its opinion about my work going forward but my mandate comes from the government,” Johnston said in a statement. “I have a duty to pursue that work until my mandate is completed.”

The retired governor general in a May 23 First Report rejected parliamentary demands for a public inquiry into alleged election fraud by Chinese agents. “I have not found examples of ministers, the Prime Minister or their offices knowingly ignoring intelligence, advice or recommendations on foreign interference or being driven by partisan considerations in dealing with these issues,” wrote Johnston.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau yesterday defended his appointee. “It’s understandable that political parties want to make partisan points on this but the fact of the matter is David Johnston has served this country,” Trudeau told reporters.

A Commons motion sponsored by New Democrat MP Jenny Kwan (Vancouver East) asked that cabinet dismiss Johnston and comply with a March 23 House motion for a public inquiry. “The situation around foreign interference is real,” said MP Kwan, who was warned by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service she was personally targeted by Chinese agents.

Senator Revives Terror Claim

By Iron Will / June 1, 2023 /

The Freedom Convoy was a “far-right extremist movement” that “terrorized” Ottawa, a Liberal-appointed senator said yesterday. Remarks by Senator Ratna Omidvar (Ont.) contradicted police evidence that Parliament Hill demonstrators were neither extremist nor violent.

The remarks came in Senate Question Period attended by Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino. Senator Omidvar in questioning the Minister likened Freedom Convoy demonstrators to terrorists.

“I would like to query you about the rise of far-right extremist movements in Canada,” said Omidvar. “We saw some of this spillover in real time when some members of the Freedom Convoy terrorized the residents of Ottawa for three weeks.”

“What is the government doing to track this?” asked Omidvar. “Specifically, are you tracking how these extremists are influencing politicians in Canada? Are intelligence agencies briefing parliamentarians who are being targeted by the far-right extremist movements? I know the talk is all about foreign interference, but what about domestic interference?”

$400 Golf Sponsorships OK’d

By Iron Will / June 1, 2023 /

A Senate employee golf tournament that’s soliciting $400 corporate sponsorships complies with all ethics codes, managers said yesterday. The tournament is scheduled only days before a new Lobbyists’ Code comes into force that limits gifts to public office holders at $40.

“The organizers are employees of Senate administration,” said Alison Korn, spokesperson for the Senate. “They are not public office holders under the Lobbying Act.”

The current Lobbyists’ Code Of Conduct states: “The term ‘public office holder’ as defined in the Lobbying Act includes senators and members of the House of Commons and their staff, ministers and their staff and employees of federal departments and agencies.”

“Canadians should expect that all who participate in the development and application of public policy, laws and regulations will act in a manner that demonstrates respect for Canada’s democratic institutions,” says the Lobbyists’ Code. “To avoid the creation of a sense of obligation a lobbyist shall not provide or promise a gift, favour or other benefit to a public office holder whom they are lobbying or will lobby which the public office holder is not allowed to accept.”

No Right To Run, Rules Judge

By Iron Will / June 1, 2023 /

The Federal Court has rejected a claim that Crown prosecutors have a constitutional right to run for public office. Courts and labour arbitrators have issued mixed rulings on whether the Public Service Employment Act restricts partisan activity by prosecutors.

“There is little to ground the claim,” wrote Justice Lobat Sadrehashemi. Declaring that nonpartisan Crown prosecutors are allowed to run for public office would be “extraordinary,” the judge added.

Noel Sinclair, senior Crown prosecutor in Whitehorse, in 2021 sought leave without pay to run for a seat in the Yukon legislature. The Public Service Commission rejected the request.

Sinclair yesterday would not say which party he sought to represent in his riding, Takhini-Kopper King. The riding was won by New Democrats that year with 63 percent of the popular vote.
