He pointed to the city’s crime rate which showed the Central Okanagan as number one among the country’s metropolitan areas – calling the city the crime capital of Canada.

The 2022 crime rate figures are expected to be released by Statistics Canada later this summer but, despite some encouraging signs, RCMP Supt. Kara Triance expects the region to again be number one.

Illegal drug toxicity is now the leading cause of death in British Columbia, killing more people between the ages of 10 and 59 than homicides, suicides, accidents and natural diseases combined.

Census Sees Fewer Homeless

By Iron Will / June 19, 2023 /

Canada’s homeless population is smaller than originally estimated, Statistics Canada data show. A Census count of people living in shelters was less than half the number in 2016.

“The Census is not an adequate tool to frequently enumerate the homeless population,” said a StatsCan report A Review Of Canadian Homelessness Data 2023. “However the Census enumerates the homeless population in shelters across the country in real time.”

The 2021 Census counted 9,275 shelter occupants, mainly in Ontario (4,060 people) and British Columbia (2,595). The 2016 Census counted more than twice as many residents in shelters nationwide, a total 22,190 people.

Authorities from the three nations say they worked together for more than five months to unravel the elaborate scheme that was worth billions of dollars.

Authorities in New Zealand and Australia say they’ve made a dozen arrests and expect more to come, while Canadian authorities said they are still investigating the case and aren’t yet providing all the details.
