What Is Canada’s Annual $16 Billion in Foreign Aid Being Spent On?

By Iron Will / May 9, 2024 /

Canada has consistently ranked as one of the most generous countries in the world when it comes to foreign aid, claiming seventh place in Official Development Assistance among OECD countries in 2023.
The country’s foreign aid for the 2022-2023 fiscal year topped $16 billion, or about a half percentage of the country’s total GDP, recently released aid data shows. The year’s aid had a sharp rise compared to the previous two years of approximately $8 billion annually, driven primarily by help for Ukraine refugees and asylum seekers.
The Liberal government says its foreign aid is directed by its Feminist International Assistance Policy, stressing that it has a focus on “gender equality.”
In highlighting its foreign aid programs in the 2024 Budget, the federal government above all promotes its support for “health and rights of women, including pre- and post-abortion care,” followed by climate change policy contributions, and the welcoming of refugees.

Medical Wait Times Cost Canadians $3.5 Billion in Lost Wages Last Year: Study

By Iron Will / May 9, 2024 /

Long waitlists for surgery and medical treatment cost Canadians $3.5 billion in lost wages and productivity in 2023, a recently published study suggests.

Approximately 1.2 million patients were left waiting for essential medical treatment last year, and each lost an average of $2,871 in wages and reduced productivity during working hours, according to the Fraser Institute.

“Waiting for medically necessary treatment remains a hallmark of the Canadian health-care system, and in addition to increased pain and suffering—and potentially worse medical outcomes—these long waits also cost Canadians time at work and with family and friends,” Fraser Institute senior fellow Nadeem Esmail said in a press release.

The study used data from the think tank’s annual survey of Canadian physicians who, in 2023, reported the average national wait time from specialist appointment to treatment was 13.1 weeks.

Tory Motion Seeks to Prevent Drug Decriminalization in Montreal and Toronto

By Iron Will / May 9, 2024 /

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has tabled a motion in the House of Commons calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reject requests from Montreal and Toronto to decriminalize illicit drugs.

The motion, introduced on May 9, also calls on the government to deny “any active or future requests from provinces, territories and municipalities” seeking federal approval to make hard drugs legal in their jurisdiction.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr. Poilievre recounted his visit to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside three years ago, saying he was “shocked and surprised” at the “carnage” active drug addiction had wreaked on the community.

“We know that this Downtown Eastside was an experiment brought in by the NDP, municipal, and provincial governments. But it was an experiment that the prime minister saw and said needed to be expanded right across the country,” Mr. Poilievre said.

Breast Cancer Screening Should Start at Age 40, Canadian Cancer Society Says

By Iron Will / May 9, 2024 /

The Canadian Cancer Society says all provinces and territories should lower the starting age for breast cancer screening to 40.

The current guideline set by a national task force says screening for people at average risk for breast cancer should start at age 50.

The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care is expected to revise that advice later this month, but the cancer society says it’s ultimately up to the provinces and territories.

Some provinces already pay for mammograms starting at age 40, but the cancer society says it’s critical for women across the country to have the same access.

Working towards a solution: Israeli and Palestinian parents mourn together

By Roli / May 8, 2024 /

If I were to communicate with young students after watching what’s happening on the campuses all over America and in many places in Europe and the United Kingdom, I would stress that this is an opportunity for them to be part of the solution to a conflict that has been going on for far too long. The loss of life and the destruction of property is beyond belief.

These students now have the attention of all the media, so why not use it to really make change? Neither side will disappear no matter which side they take, so I would ask, “How can we end this madness?” My answer would be, “Instead of importing our conflict, why not export support for groups who are doing the work on the ground to end the destruction of war and recognize the humanity in the other?”

I belong to an organization of some seven hundred bereaved Palestinian and Israeli families who have all lost a loved one in the conflict. Every day we work for a nonviolent solution to end the war and the occupation. I joined the Parents Circle – Families Forum after my son David was killed by a Palestinian sniper. One Palestinian killed my son, not the whole Palestinian nation.

Pfizer to Sell Drugs Online to Consumers, Bypassing Doctors and Pharmacies

By Roli / May 8, 2024 /

Pfizer is developing a direct-to-consumer platform to sell some of its drugs online, including Paxlovid and a migraine nasal spray, the Financial Times reported.

The move is the latest by Big Pharma to bypass primary care physicians and traditional pharmacies to sell drugs. It follows Eli Lilly’s launch in January of LillyDirect, which provides home delivery of diabetes, obesity and migraine medications.

Pfizer’s website will connect patients in the U.S. with independent telehealth consultants who can prescribe medications, and an online pharmacy partner will fill and ship prescriptions. The drugmaker plans to have the website up before the end of the year.

Timothy Mackey, Ph.D., professor of global health at the University of California, San Diego, told the Financial Times that Big Pharma is realizing that “the best way to convert customers is through patient portals where they can act as a consumer in medicine.”

USDA Muzzles Scientists, Offers No Explanation

By Roli / May 8, 2024 /

Officials at the U.S. Department of Agriculture last month refused to allow two scientists to speak with U.S. Right to Know, a nonprofit public health research group.

The officials gave no reason for their denials of the interviews.

The USDA oversees important public health matters, including recalls of meat and poultry, as well as monitoring of bird flu.

The agency also bears partial oversight in communication about nutrition labeling, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Among press advocacy groups, this type of silencing of federal employees is known as “censorship by PIO,” or public information officer.
