Skin(ny) in the Game Where are the Ozempic mandates?

By Roli / June 20, 2023 /

Some of you will recall that a couple of months back I wrote about Ozempic and was skeptical. Is there such a thing as a wonder-drug for obesity with no side effects? Seems a little too good to be true. Not a bandwagon I’ll be jumping on yet.

During the pandemic, less than 3% of deaths were from COVID, and the vast majority of those 3% were in elderly or very elderly people with “comorbidities”. One of the most common sets of comorbidities was obesity-related disorders: type 2 diabetes, vascular disease, atrial fib, etc. And out of the other 97% of deaths, many were obesity-related as well. In short, even in the times of COVID, obesity killed far more people than did COVID. So why didn’t his royal majesty Justin Trudea villainize the obese?

An affirming approach to caring for transgender and gender-diverse youth

By Iron Will / June 20, 2023 /

Increasing numbers of youth identify as transgender or gender-diverse (TGD). Many paediatricians and primary care providers (PCPs) will encounter this population in their practice, either for gender-related care or general health needs. This statement is intended as a resource to guide paediatricians and PCPs in implementing an affirming approach to routine health care provision for all youth. Furthermore, it presents information to assist providers in responding to requests for counselling from TGD youth and their families around potential options for medical transition, and in making referrals to specialized services, if desired and relevant. Finally, as demand for gender-affirming care is anticipated to continue to increase, some health care providers (HCPs) may wish to develop the knowledge and skills required to initiate adolescents on hormone-blocking agents and gender-affirming hormones. This document is not intended to be a clinical practice guideline, but will provide foundational information regarding these potential components of gender-affirming care, recognizing that the needs and goals of individual adolescents may or may not include such interventions. Additional resources relevant to developing the expertise required to provide gender-affirming interventions will also be identified.

Vaccine Scientist Peter Hotez Responds to Joe Rogan’s Call to Debate RFK Jr.

By Iron Will / June 19, 2023 /

A vaccine scientist who was challenged by podcaster Joe Rogan to debate 2024 Democratic candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. responded to the demands and claimed that scientists “don’t typically do debates.”

“In science, we don’t typically do debates,” Dr. Peter Hotez said in an MSNBC interview over the past weekend, responding to Rogan’s request. “What we do is we write scientific papers … one doesn’t typically debate science. Maybe the one-off discussion of evolution versus creationism and that sort of thing, but that’s not what we do in science.”

And he went a step further, saying: “Anti-vaccine disinformation … is now a lethal force in the United States. I offered to go on Joe Rogan but not to turn it into the Jerry Springer show with having RFK, Jr. on.”

All COVID-Infected at Health Conference Were Vaccinated: Study COVID NEWS

By Iron Will / June 19, 2023 /

Every person known to be infected with COVID-19 after attending a health conference in Germany was vaccinated, according to a new study.

All people who reported testing positive for COVID-19 said they had received at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Approximately 4,462 people attended the conference in Berlin in the fall of 2022 but just 1,355 filled out a survey and only about half of those were tested after the conference, researchers said in the new paper, published on June 13 by JAMA Network Open, a journal from the American Medical Association.

Is digital health the next frontier in the global fight against cancer?

By Iron Will / June 19, 2023 /

With one in six deaths caused by cancer, experts are searching for new digital health innovations that could turn the tide in the fight against it.
The rapid rise of digital and data-driven technology in healthcare could offer unprecedented potential in the fight against cancer.
Global leaders must take steps to ensure that the digital health revolution helps produce a more equitable and sustainable global health system.
Many notable innovations have recently emerged in oncology, including CAR-T cell therapy, liquid biopsies and CRISPR-based treatment — most stemming from biological science fields, such as genomics, pathology and immunology.

However, the rapid rise of digital and data-driven technology in healthcare — such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of things (IoT) and robotics — could offer unprecedented potential in the fight against cancer.

New Zealand ‘Equity Adjustor Score’ Asks Surgeons to Prioritize Non-White Patients

By Iron Will / June 19, 2023 /

urgeons in Auckland, New Zealand, are expressing discomfort with a new policy that requires them to consider the ethnicity of their patients as a factor when scheduling surgeries.

Specifically, Maori and Pacific Islander patients are given priority consideration to compensate for historic inequality in access to health care.

Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand, a national public health agency established in July 2022 to consolidate numerous regional health boards, introduced an “Equity Adjustor Score” that sets five factors to be considered in surgery priority lists.

The five factors are clinical priority, time already spent on wait lists, if the patient lives in a geographically isolated area, economic deprivation, and ethnicity. The highest scores for ethnicity are given to Maori and Pacific Island (or “Pasifika”) peoples.

More than 1 million people are dropped from Medicaid as states start a post-pandemic purge of rolls

By Iron Will / June 19, 2023 /

More than 1 million people have been dropped from Medicaid in the past couple months as some states moved swiftly to halt health care coverage following the end of the coronavirus pandemic.

Most got dropped for not filling out paperwork.

Though the eligibility review is required by the federal government, President’s Joe Biden’s administration isn’t too pleased at how efficiently some other states are accomplishing the task.
