ESG is a surprise boon for fossil fuel giants

New reporting from Bloomberg reveals the truth: ESG, through sloppy accounting, has dumped nearly $30 billion into one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies. The beneficiary is Aramco, Saudi Arabia’s national oil and gas firm.

The company never intended to benefit from ESG. In fact, it’s been hostile to the entire project. Amin Nasser, Aramco’s chief executive, has criticized ESG for its bias against traditional energy projects, especially those using fossil fuels. So how did this happen?

Pro-China Petition Sputters

By Iron Will / July 19, 2023 /

A petition opposing federal introduction of a public registry of foreign agents has closed with fewer than 2,500 signatures, a fraction of other petitions, records show. Liberal-appointed Senator Yuen Pau Woo had appealed to Canadians to rally behind it.

“Sign the petition,” Senator Woo wrote in Facebook and Twitter posts. Any foreign registry “poses a serious harassment and stigmatization risk for racialized communities,” he said.

Petition E-4395 opposed a registry “as a misleading way to identify sources of foreign influence,” it said. “It is difficult to distinguish between positive and malign foreign influence which goes well beyond agents who are acting for foreign governments.”

Recent resignations suggest industry has too much sway with Health Canada: NDP

By Roli / July 19, 2023 /

OTTAWA – NDP health critic Don Davies says the resignation of a scientific adviser from the federal pesticide regulator is yet another example of industry having too much influence at Health Canada.

Dr. Bruce Lanphear, a health-sciences professor at Simon Fraser University, stepped down as co-chair of Health Canada’s scientific advisory committee on pest control products late last month.

He cited concerns over the role the pesticide industry plays in the regulatory process, pointing to a tendency to favour industry-provided data over more broad, independent studies.
