Sask. teachers’ union says new school funding announcement ‘missing a zero’

By Iron Will / June 22, 2023 /

The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) is expressing frustration with the provincial government’s recent announcement of a $40-million bump in funding for school divisions across the province, saying the new money isn’t enough to meet the needs of schools wrestling with high inflation and rising enrolments.

“(The) announcement seems to be missing a zero,” STF president Samantha Becotte said, referring to 2022 data from the Fraser Institute that indicates the province needs $400 million to restore per-student funding to 2012-13 levels. “It also comes with just a few short weeks left in the school year, while school divisions are finalizing their budgets.”

Randi Weingarten Appointed to DHS School Safety Advisory Council

By Iron Will / June 22, 2023 /

American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten was appointed Monday to a new Department of Homeland Security school safety advisory council tasked with making recommendations on “emergency management,” “preparedness measures,” and “safety and security” in schools.

Weingarten rose to prominence during the Covid pandemic as one of the chief advocates of school closures. The AFT, the nation’s second-largest largest teachers’ union, pushed the CDC to delay opening schools well after most other developed nations has returned children to the classroom, emails obtained by Americans for Public Trust revealed.

In the fall of 2020, Weingarten denounced calls to reopen schools as “reckless, callous, cruel.” An AFT affiliate in Chicago similarly condemned then-Mayor Lori Lightfoot in 2022, who called her efforts to reopen school “rooted in sexism, racism, and misogyny.”

Lockdowns Blamed for Sharp Rise in Teenage Girls With Eating Disorders Since 2020

By Iron Will / June 22, 2023 /

GP records show a sharp rise in teenage girls in the UK developing eating disorders and self-harming during the Covid pandemic, a study has found.

The increases were greatest among girls living in the wealthiest areas, which could be due to better GP access.

Young women have told the BBC that the lack of control over their lives during lockdown was a behavioural trigger.

The government says it is investing in eating disorders services to help more children and young people.

Charities maintain everyone needs access to early support for mental health issues, no matter where they live.

Editor of New Book on Canadian History Hits Back at ‘Cancelling’ of Canada

By Iron Will / June 22, 2023 /

The editor of a new book examining Canadian history says he wants to challenge the notion that Canada is a “genocidal” nation-state that deserves to have its historical figures cancelled.

“Why are we picking on people long dead, as opposed to trying to give them fair treatment or fair understanding and put things into context?” said Mark Milke, editor of “The 1867 Project—Why Canada Should Be Cherished, Not Cancelled.”

Find China’s Big On Campus

By Iron Will / June 21, 2023 /

Parliament must mandate disclosure of universities’ dealings with Huawei Technologies and other Chinese partners, the Commons science committee was told yesterday. “We need to stop these terrible deals,” testified one witness. “End them now.”

“We need to know who is working with Canadian research institutions and how much they have been benefiting,” said James Hinton, associate professor at Western University and senior fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation of Waterloo, Ont. “We really don’t know.”

Hinton listed universities that dealt with Huawei prior to a federal ban on use of the company’s equipment. “I am naming these names so there is no longer a veil of secrecy in these deals,” said Hinton. “This is just the tip of the iceberg.”
