The class action lawsuit was brought forward by representative plaintiff Deborah Douez in 2012 after her name and account were used in a “sponsored story” ad without her knowledge or permission.

The suit alleged Facebook violated the privacy acts of the provinces and owe users damages for breaching their privacy.

In January, lawyers for the plaintiffs and Facebook owner Meta announced a settlement has been reached. The settlement is a “compromise of disputed claims” and is not an admission of liability or wrongdoing by the defendant, said court-appointed claims administrator MNP Ltd.
