David Dodge wasn’t wrong, this federal budget is ‘one of the worst in decades’: Jack Mintz in the Financial Post Chrystia Freeland’s budget fails to address the biggest problem facing Canada — our declining standard of living.

By Valerie / April 17, 2024 /

David Dodge, former deputy finance minister and governor of the Bank of Canada, said before the 2024 federal budget was presented that it would “likely be one of the worst in decades.” He wasn’t wrong. The budget Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland delivered Tuesday fails to address the biggest problem currently facing Canada — our declining standard of living.

It is very irritating to hear the Trudeau government congratulate itself for Canada’s economic growth over the past few years without pointing out that all of it has come from immigration. Factor out population growth and Canada’s real GDP “growth” per capita has been negative 2.5 per cent — a number mentioned nowhere in the budget. Even Carolyn Rogers, deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, recently called our weak economic performance an economic emergency — and bank officials are always extremely careful about their choice of words.

In a landmark decision, the US Supreme Court has established a significant precedent for free speech in the digital realm. On Friday, the court unanimously ruled that, under certain conditions, government officials may face lawsuits for violating the First Amendment if they block critics on social media. This decision introduces a critical test for assessing whether officials are acting within their governmental capacity when they silence online dissent.

Court Overturns Ban on Conservative Conference in Brussels in Win for Free Speech Advocates

By Iron Will / April 17, 2024 /

‘In allowing the National Conservatism Conference to continue, the Administrative Court has come down on the side of basic human rights.’

The top administrative court in Belgium issued an emergency late-night ruling in favor of a conservative conference, overturning a ban by a mayor who cited “public safety” concerns, but explicitly said the “far-right is not welcome,” with the court allowing the conference to resume on April 17 after it was blocked a day earlier by police.

The National Conservative (NatCon) conference, which featured prominent conservatives as guest speakers like British politician Nigel Farage and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, was free to resume Wednesday after the Conseil d’État, the highest court in Belgium relating to issues of public administration, overturned the mayoral ban.

“NatCon Brussels 2 will be free to meet today for its second day of programming without further interference from state authorities,” the organizers said in a post X, announcing the breakthrough.

“Weasel Words” – Stella Assange Challenges US Over Julian’s Fate

By Iron Will / April 17, 2024 /

Stella Assange claims US diplomatic assurances offer no real protection for Julian under the First Amendment.

Stella Assange has once again urged the Biden White House to give up on prosecuting her husband Julian Assange, at the same time accusing the US authorities of resorting to “blatant weasel words” when addressing the issue of granting the WikiLeaks founder First Amendment protections.

In a post on X, Stella Assange said that a diplomatic note from the US that was supposed to provide assurances regarding Assange’s future if extradited to the US did not succeed in doing that.

When it comes to the First Amendment, the note amounted to being “a non-assurance,” Stella wrote, which did not override the prosecution’s claim her husband had no rights guaranteed in this respect because he is not a US citizen. Instead it now only said that he can “seek to raise” the First Amendment if he finds himself in custody in the US.

At the same time, the note contained “a standard assurance in relation to the death penalty,” the post said. (Reuters cited the document as stating that “a sentence of death will neither be sought nor imposed.”)
