While Canada dithers on natural gas US adds to its LNG lead

By Iron Will / June 27, 2023 /

Even as Canada struggles to build its first liquified natural gas (LNG) export terminal, the US approved another five-billion cubic feet (bcf) per day of capacity, solidifying its hold on the global market as it signs new supply deals on an almost daily basis.

On Tuesday, Houston-based Cheniere signed a 20-year deal with China’s ENN Natural Gas Co. to supply about 50 billion cubic feet of gas through its Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana. It comes on top of a separate 15-year deal with Norwegian state oil company Equinor for another 85 bcf, bringing the nameplate capacity of its facilities to a whopping 1 trillion cubic feet per year.

It’s the world’s ‘other’ greenhouse gas, and it’s about 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere.

Now Canada is taking steps to clamp down on methane, which accounts for about a fifth of global emissions.

Methane comes from a variety of sources, including landfills, coal mining, stationary and mobile combustion, wastewater treatment and agriculture — think belching cows.

By Iron Will / June 27, 2023 /

Minnesota, long known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” is a heralded haven for people and wildlife alike, a state rich in natural resources.

But now, a nickel mine proposed for northern Minnesota poses a threat to the stability of precious wetland ecosystems, according to critics trying to block the project.

Though backers of the mine claim it will be an environmentally friendly operation that provides crucial material for the production of electric vehicle batteries, challengers say the mine could actually create more environmental problems than it will solve.

By Iron Will / June 27, 2023 /

arry Fink would do well to book an appointment with his chiropractor to help undo the knots he tied himself in over the weekend.

The world’s wokest country is leaving Britain’s economy in the dust

By Iron Will / June 27, 2023 /

lashing public spending. Tearing up our arbitrary net zero targets. Privatising healthcare, liberalising planning, deregulating our labour market. These may be desirable policies that could get the British economy growing again, breaking us out of the doom-loop of stagnation, rising taxes and higher inflation – but they would be very difficult to implement.

Yet we may not need such a radical agenda to turn the UK economy around: currently, even Justin Trudeau’s ultra-woke Canada is beating us on growth. With moderate reforms in just a few areas, particularly climate change, we could significantly improve our performance.

By Iron Will / June 26, 2023 /

Canada has for years forked over billions of dollars in subsidies to oil and gas companies — an approach that critics say flies in the face of the country’s climate goals, and impinges on efforts to turn toward renewable energy sources.

Now, the federal government is preparing to release a new policy that will put an end to “inefficient fossil fuel subsidies,” a commitment Canada made more than a decade ago.

A spokesperson for Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said the new policy will be released in July.

But the strength of that commitment, environmental groups say, will hinge on how exactly the terms “inefficient” and “subsidy” are defined.
