Multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow

Major global shocks in recent years – including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, and the triple planetary crisis, among others – have challenged our international institutions. Unity around our shared principles and common goals is both crucial and urgent.

The Summit of the Future is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enhance cooperation on critical challenges and address gaps in global governance, reaffirm existing commitments including to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Charter, and move towards a reinvigorated multilateral system that is better positioned to positively impact people’s lives. Building on the SDG Summit in 2023, Member States will consider ways to lay the foundations for more effective global cooperation that can deal with today’s challenges as well as new threats in the future.

Feds Encourage Work Past 65

Tax measures should support Canadians who work past 65, says Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne. The number of pensioners who remain in the workforce is currently the highest in history, according to federal data.

“Efforts are being undertaken to support retirees,” Minister Champagne wrote in a letter to the Commons industry committee. The Income Tax Act should “not create barriers to seniors who want to remain in the workforce.”

Champagne’s letter follows a March 9 committee report recommended cabinet “encourage labour market participation among workers who are approaching retirement age or who have reached it, by introducing new tax or other incentives.”

Difficult To Define ‘Inefficient’

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault yesterday renewed a 2016 pledge to phase out “inefficient” fossil fuel subsidies without defining “inefficient.” Enforcement is scheduled for 2025.

“Canada is committed to supporting energy innovation and environmental improvements to ensure Canadians, communities and businesses can thrive,” Minister Guilbeault said in a statement. “Be eliminating inefficient fossil fuel subsidies we are encouraging smart and efficient government investment.”

BONOKOSKI: Hells Angels’ control of BC ports

Thousands of port workers, including scores of Hell Angels, their associates, gangsters, and other criminals across British Columbia, are set to resume strike activity after failing to ratify a tentative deal that was reached through federal mediation.

More than 7,400 workers from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) had walked off the job from July 1 until July 13 over issues like port automation, outside contracting and the increasing cost of living.

Guilbeault wants to phase out oil ‘subsidies’ early

Canada will be the first country in the G20 — and indeed the world — to eliminate “inefficient” subsidies for oil and gas, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said from Ottawa Monday.

Starting in 2028 — not 2030 — the federal government will eliminate tax breaks, financing and loan guarantees for fossil fuel projects that don’t in some way reduce emissions in order to limit global warming to 1.5C in accordance with international agreements such as the Paris Accord.

A $630 property tax hike coming for Saskatoon homeowners

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) wants the Saskatoon city council to reduce spending and prevent a proposed tax hikes.

The CTF is urging the council to take action during the upcoming special budget meeting on Tuesday, July 25.

The International Conference on Development and Migration is an initiative of Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and it was held at the Italian Foreign Ministry in Rome on Sunday.Italy hosted an important meeting on migration and the Mediterranean in which Rome brought together Middle East countries to discuss important issues that affect Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

The International Conference on Development and Migration is an initiative of Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and it was held at the Italian Foreign Ministry in Rome on Sunday. Its aim is “finding shared solutions for the Mediterranean and Africa.” The event comes after an EU-backed deal with Tunisia. Israel, which is not a destination for many migrants these days, was not one of the countries invited.
