Bad news comes in threes.

After the Canadian government lavished billions in subsidies to lure Volkswagen and Stellantis to build EV battery plants in Canada, a similar deal is reportedly in the works to compel Swedish manufacturer Northvolt to build a factory near Montreal.

Bloomberg reported Thursday that Northvolt is close to signing a $7 billion deal with the government’s of Canada and Quebec to build the facility, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

The report, compiled by London’s Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, defines ‘climate washing’ as cases that challenge companies, and occasionally governments, over misinformation or misleading green claims.

Climate Subsidy For The CNR

Cabinet approved millions in climate subsidies to one of Canada’s most profitable corporations, records show. Canadian National Railways Company received the $4.4 million subsidy last November 28 to install electric charging stations.

The Department of Natural Resources in an Inquiry Of Ministry tabled in the Commons said it awarded CN funding to install 62 electric vehicle chargers in British Columbia, Ontario and Québec. The figures were tabled at the request of Conservative MP Warren Steinley (Regina-Lewvan) who asked for details “with regards to repayable loans and repayable contributions over $1 million given out by the government since January 1, 2019.”

Canadian National Railways last year reported record revenues of $17.1 billion, up 18 percent, according to its Annual Report to shareholders. Net income was $5.1 billion. Terms of the $4,425,000 subsidy were not disclosed.

City of Edmonton reduces number of departments, introduces new chief climate officer

City of Edmonton Manager Andre Corbould reduced the number of city departments and deputy city managers from seven to five.

On Wednesday, Corbould reduced the number of leadership positions in the city and said it will be “introducing a broader approach” to decision-making within the city administration.

Departments providing services — City Operations, Community Services, Financial and Corporate Services, Integrated Infrastructure Services, and Urban Planning and Economy — will continue.

“We’ve got equivalent investments that need to be made in Western Canada,” said Smith at a Tuesday press conference after the Western Premiers’ Conference.
