By Valerie / August 16, 2023 /

Rishi Sunak yesterday accused Sir Keir Starmer of putting women and girls at risk with yet another U-turn over self-identification for trans people.

It came after the Labour leader used an event near Glasgow to say that he would not have blocked the SNP’s proposed gender recognition reforms.

Brought forward under former First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, they would have allowed people as young as 16 to self-declare their gender without the need for a medical diagnosis.

US appeals court rules to restrict abortion pill use

By Valerie / August 16, 2023 /

Access to the abortion pill mifepristone must be restricted, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Wednesday, ordering a ban on telemedicine prescriptions and shipments of the drug by mail, though the order will not immediately take effect.

The New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stopped short of ruling that the drug must be pulled off the market altogether, as a lower court had done.

Mifepristone’s availability remains unchanged for now, following an emergency order from the U.S. Supreme Court in April preserving the status quo during the appeal.

The circumstances of the present pandemic facilitated a unique opportunity to fully examine this provocative idea. Health News Research & Discoveries COVID News Health Care NIH Says Pregnant Women and Newborns Can Benefit From COVID-19 Boosters Based on Flawed New Study Data

By Valerie / August 15, 2023 /

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says mothers and their newborns can benefit from COVID-19 vaccine boosters given during pregnancy after a study showed significantly higher antibody levels in the cord blood of babies born to women who received a booster during pregnancy compared with those who only received the two-dose primary series.

Yet the study cited had some major limitations. It used monovalent COVID-19 vaccines that are no longer available in the United States, did not assess the effectiveness of the vaccine against currently dominant COVID-19 variants, did not provide safety data for a third vaccine dose, and determined the vaccine would be protective based on neutralizing antibody levels alone.
