You know that weird feeling when the U.S. Senate passes a seemingly routine spending bill, President Joe Biden signs it into law, and a government shutdown is averted—but then later, you learn that included deep inside this seemingly innocuous bill is a provision to track beef cattle?
Specifically, included in this massive spending bill is a $15 million outlay for the purchase of electronic RFID ear tags for cows and bison.
While it’s seemingly random, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) doesn’t see it that way. Instead, after learning of this provision, he issued a warning about how these ear tags might eventually be used to electronically track livestock across the country in an effort to limit the consumption of beef.
Let’s unpack whether this is actually the case.
