t’s “not worth it” for Taiwanese citizens to get Chinese ID cards for money, Lai Ching-te said in his first New Year speech as president of Taiwan, or the Republic of China (ROC).
The remark came as Taiwanese authorities are investigating a claim that at least 100,000 citizens are holding ID cards issued by communist-ruled mainland China, or the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
In a video published last week by a Taiwanese YouTuber known as Pa Chiung, a middleman who helps the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to attract visitors from Taiwan was heard telling undercover reporters that the CCP has been incentivizing Taiwanese citizens to apply for Chinese ID cards by giving them subsidies and loans.
