Think before you speak, or tweet, is wise advice at the best of times – but never more so than now.

You could be reported to police for a hate crime by someone you’ve never met, and officers are duty-bound to investigate.

As we revealed yesterday, a leading Conservative MSP, Murdo Fraser, found out almost by accident that his name was in police files.

One of his online posts, criticising the SNP Government’s transgender policy, led to an activist branding the tweet a hate crime, and calling in Police Scotland and the Holyrood standards watchdog.
