Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s department yesterday said it does not know how many billions it is currently spending on debt interest charges. One senator expressed disbelief.
“I find the government is very secretive about information,” Senator Elizabeth Marshall (Nfld. and Labrador), a former provincial auditor, told the Senate national finance committee. “I just make that statement that you can’t give us a number for revised public debt charges.”
Finance department managers testifying at committee said they did not know the figure. No reason was given.
