Canada’s leading proponent of a home equity tax faced an empty Parliament Hill pressroom Friday. No reporters, MPs, senators or political aides attended remarks by Professor Paul Kershaw of the University of British Columbia, a CMHC consultant.

“Do people have questions anyone would like to ask?” asked a moderator. The room was silent. “That’s fine,” said Professor Kershaw.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation earlier paid $450,000 for a 2022 report by Kershaw and UBC researchers that proposed a $5.8 billion annual equity tax on homeowners. The report Wealth And The Problems Of Housing Inequity Across Generations was rejected by cabinet.
