The Commons industry committee last night voted to investigate the hiring of South Koreans at a subsidized battery factory. MPs demanded to know how many foreigners will work at taxpayers’ expense.

“The motivation is simple: transparency,” said Conservative MP Rick Perkins (South Shore-St. Margarets, N.S.). “We have $15 billion of taxpayers’ money going to subsidize one of the largest foreign auto companies in the world. There should be transparency on where it is going.”

Cabinet in 2022 committed $10 billion in federal aid to build a Stellantis electric vehicle battery plant in Windsor, Ont. The Government of Ontario pledged an additional $5 billion in aid. MP Perkins estimated “80 percent of the parts for electric vehicle batteries in the world right now are actually manufactured in China.”
