Most Canadian homeowners now spend more than $200 a month for heat and light, says in-house research by the Department of Natural Resources. A fifth of Canadians, 21 percent, said “my home energy costs are a significant financial burden.”

“More than half of respondents, 53 percent, reported they spend more than $200 per month on home energy bills,” wrote researchers. “Homeowners in Alberta (74 percent), the Atlantic provinces (69 percent) and the Territories (79 percent) are more likely than other homeowners to report paying more than $200 per month for their primary residence’s energy bills.”
