Anthony Rota yesterday became the first Commons Speaker in 66 years to resign under threat of formal censure. All parties in the House expressed disgust after Rota sponsored a VIP welcome on Parliament Hill for a Waffen SS member.
“I must step down as your Speaker,” Rota told MPs. “I reiterate my profound regret for my error.” The resignation would take effect this evening “to allow preparations for the election of a new Speaker,” he added.
