A federal program paid intervenors to take the federal government’s side in a 2021 Supreme Court of Canada challenge of the carbon tax, records show. The Court Challenges Program yesterday would not discuss subsidies paid to advocacy groups to argue in favour of cabinet’s fuel tax.
“The existence of the Court Challenges Program and the significant contribution it makes in terms of promoting equitable access to the courts are important, especially in the context of unprecedented upheavals the world is currently experiencing,” directors wrote in an Annual Report tabled in Parliament. The document contained the first-ever list of litigants who received taxpayer funding.
