Federal employees did their bit to save electricity under a January 13 Alberta Emergency alert, records show. Guards dimmed the lights at an Edmonton penitentiary while constables unplugged RCMP block heaters at Elk Point as temperatures fell to -40°.

Prisoners at the Edmonton Institution for Women “were asked to voluntarily unplug appliances and turn off their lights,” said an Inquiry Of Ministry tabled in the Commons. At the minimum security Grierson Institution they stopped the Saturday night laundry “as dryers are powered by electricity.”

The Inquiry was tabled by cabinet at the request of Conservative MP Mike Lake (Edmonton Wetaskiwin) who asked, “What specific actions if any were taken by the government to limit the amount of electricity it was using at federal buildings and facilities in Alberta during this crisis?”
