Alex Millaire, Kaitlin Milroy and their two-year-old son live in a one-bedroom apartment in the Beechwood area, where the living room doubles as rehearsal space and office for their bilingual folk band Moonfruits.

The pair, who have fronted Moonfruits for more than a decade, would like to move to a two-bedroom apartment — or even buy a house — but right now that’s not in the cards. They have no health insurance aside from OHIP, and if their Kia Rondo breaks down, it would throw a wrench into their slim budget.
