By Iron Will / March 13, 2024 /

Major opposition parties and former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole will be given the powers to cross-examine witnesses in the next phase of the public inquiry into foreign interference in Canada’s federal elections.

The Conservatives, NDP, Bloc Québécois, and Mr. O’Toole will receive these rights during the next phase of the public hearings, slated to run from March 27 to April 10, according to the commission’s spokesperson Michael Tansey. The four were previously given “intervener” status, which denied them the right to question witnesses.

Margaret Atwood compares Trudeau’s proposed Online Harms Act to Orwell’s ‘1984’

By Shawna / March 13, 2024 /

On March 12, Virani claimed Atwood, famous for writing The Handmaid’s Tale, misunderstood the Online Harms Act, after the left-leaning author warned it would punish Canadians for “thoughtcrime,” comparing the legislation to laws introduced by totalitarian regimes such as the corrupt French aristocracy and the Soviet Union.

“If this account of the bill is true, it’s Lettres de Cachet all over again,” Atwood wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, referring to secret letters sent by the King of France authorizing citizens to be imprisoned without a trial.

“The possibilities for revenge false accusations + thoughtcrime stuff are sooo inviting!” she added sarcastically. “Trudeau’s Orwellian online harms bill.”

While Atwood is known to be left-leaning, this is not the first time she called out Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for restricting freedom of speech. In April 2023, Atwood cautioned against Trudeau’s internet censorship legislation Bill C-11, comparing it to censorship in the Soviet Union.

Can Australia Endure the Woke Onslaught? Reflections on the Land Down Under

By Valerie / March 12, 2024 /

For the last two weeks, I’ve had the great pleasure of travelling around Australia and speaking at various events in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle and Canberra. While a terrific honour for me, this is undoubtedly a bad sign for Australia: the tragedy of my career is that I say obvious things that everyone knows and am lavished with entirely unmerited praise in response. It pains me to point this out but if Konstantin Kisin has been invited to give a series of talks in your country, all is not well.

This is the bad news for Australia: it appears to have been infected with the same

Libs Targeting Filipino Voters

By Valerie / March 11, 2024 /

Cabinet members facing re-election commissioned Privy Council research on whether Filipino-Canadian voters felt they were getting enough “attention,” newly-disclosed records show. Liberals currently hold all but three of the ten largest Filipino ridings nationwide.

“Asked whether they felt that the Government of Canada paid attention to and understood the issues important to the Filipino community, a large number believed that it did,” said a Privy Council report. “It was generally thought that the federal government placed a high priority on protecting and celebrating diversity throughout Canada and that there was a wide range of cultural resources available to Filipinos in many parts of the country.”

Reported Memories As Facts

By Valerie / March 11, 2024 /

Uncorroborated childhood memories cannot be reported as fact, says the CBC’s Ombudsman. The advisory followed complaints a Manitoba town was unfairly depicted as cruel and bigoted in a Truth and Reconciliation Day story.

“I understand why the reporter and editors would see this as an important issue to explore but with little to no documentation it would not be easy to corroborate the memories of the students,” wrote Ombudsman Jack Nagler. The story “was not the first time, nor will it be the last time, that a reporter would face the dilemma of how to handle allegations that can’t be fully verified.”

CBC Winnipeg in 2022 published an online article alleging crimes against Indigenous chil

Mexico’s Precaution on GM Corn Safety Is Justified

By Roli / March 8, 2024 /

A Presidential decree has banned the use of genetically modified (GM or genetically engineered) corn for food in Mexico. But the governments of the United States and Canada are using the U.S.-Canada-Mexico trade agreement (USMCA) to challenge Mexico’s actions.

The purpose of Mexico’s restrictions on GM corn is to safeguard the integrity of native corn from GM contamination and to protect human health. The purpose of the U.S. and Canadian challenge is to defend the interests of the biotechnology industry.

The U.S. and Canada want to force Mexico to open its market to all genetically modified foods and seeds. Canada is supporting the U.S. challenge (as a third party in the dispute) even though Canada does not export any corn to Mexico.
